Anne Arundel County is located in central Maryland adjacent to Baltimore City and Baltimore, Calvert, Howard and Prince George’s counties and is bordered by the Chesapeake Bay. According to the 2000 census, the population is approximately 490,000 with 36,000 in the City of Annapolis. Most of the county is suburban and rural and there is minimal gang activity.

Gangs are an emerging problem in Anne Arundel County. The presence of graffiti and the identification of some local gangs including Hood Fellas, Shipley’s Choice Kings and MS13 suggest the presence of perhaps 25 gangs with more than 75 members. At this point the extent of gang-related crime is unknown.

If a parent is concerned about a child as potentially being involved in gangs, the first resource is the child’s school counselor or pupil personnel worker. For a list of school telephone numbers, please consult list of schools.
