On March 1, 2009, at approximately 2:06 a.m., officers responded to the 1200 block of Capital Center Boulevard for a report of a shooting. As a result of this shooting, Vincent Tyrrell Mastin, 35, of the 15000 block of Everglade Lane, Bowie, Maryland, was located outside and pronounced dead on scene. Six other victims were transported to local hospitals with gunshot wounds that appear to be non-life threatening.

Concerned about the violence that is occurring in and around late night events in the County, Police Chief Roberto L. Hylton stated, "This type of violence is unacceptable and I will be initiating policy changes to ensure that the police department is notified in advance of these events so that security arrangements can be reviewed prior to the event. I may also be requesting legislation that would give the department additional leverage to deal with these types of events."
